(welcome to the monkeyhouse)

1. if you've never read kurt vonnegut's welcome to the monkeyhouse, now is the time. the title story is freakishly prescient, especially considering what i just ran across on yahoo news.

2. i am by no means "pro-abortion"--i am pro-choice; those of you who know me know i chose to have my daughter. i am also realistic about the path to eliminating abortion, or reducing it to a last-resort medical procedure when circumstances necessitate it. but i cannot rationalize (as happens in the vonnegut story) attempting to control abortion/pregnancy rates by simply insisting that no one have sex unless they want children.

obviously, married couples are now taking steps to ensure they don't become parents, either too soon or ever.

3. i know we all know this, but i have to say it: more birth control doesn't mean more sex; it means safer sex, without the possibility of unprepared parents having unwanted children.

oh, sometimes i hate this country--i don't understand how compromise is so hard.
