i just realized it!

why was "the cosby show" named as such, when the show is about the huxtable family?

(yes, this is the great question i am asking myself today).

It's part of the convention of pre-90s sitcoms: the Dick Van Dyke show, the Andy Griffith show, Newhart, Mary Tyler Moore, etc. You sell the star, not the character.

There are a handful of post-90s examples: John Larroquette comes to mind, and of course, Bernie Mac -- but he also plays Bernie Mac on the show.
